Ruins of Leon Viejo

Ruins of Leon:
León Viejo is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. It
did not develop and so its ruins are outstanding testimony to the social and
economic structures of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Moreover, the
site has immense archaeological potential.
Old Leon was set by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba en 1524, same person who
settled Granada. The city was abandoned en 1610, probably because of several
natural disasters, as well a lack of Indigenous people whose labor could be
exploited. The ruins where found in 1967 by the National University Leon and
recognized in 2000 by UNESCO as a cultural site of international significance.
Many of the buildings that have been excavated and stabilized are along the main
avenue leading west from the main plaza, where the statue of Hernandez de
Córdoba and crypt are. Walking along the main avenue, you pass the old mint, the
church and the governor’s house. At the far end of the avenue are the convent
and church of the Merced order of nuns.
Justification for Inscription to Unesco’s world heritage list in 2000.
Criterion iii the ruined town of León Viejo provides exceptional testimony to
the material culture of one of the earliest Spanish colonial settlements.
Criterion iv The form and nature of early Spanish settlement in the New World,
adapting European architectural and planning concepts to the material potential
of another region, are uniquely preserved in the archaeological site of León
Viejo.
We end the day by checking in at our hotel in the center of Leon.
