Witch towns:
During the Pre-Hispanic period the settlers of Catarina and San Juan de Oriente found the population under the control of the Dirianes. This area formed part of the Namotivas towns that in the native tongue of Nahualt signifies "brothering or neighboring towns". Many years ago only naturists, faith healers or witch doctors exercised Nicaraguan medicine. Catarina and its neighboring towns were no exception, but since these actions were performed so well, they gained the name "Pueblos Brujos" or witch towns. In Catarina this profession is no longer practiced. Tourism has become an important source of income for the people of this small town. They offer the visitor a great variety of handmade crafts from wood, clay or bamboo, as well as ornamental and decorative plants, fruits and typical Nicaraguan food.
San Juan de Oriente:
San Juan de Oriente has been known for its pottery since the 17th century. The village's former name was San Juan de los Platos
(Saint John of the Plates), indicating the village industry. A name change
occurred after Nicaraguan independence from Spain in 1821. This small village
offers world's finest ceramic, you will not only enjoy the product but as well
it's process. Many families are willing to teach you a bit about their ancient
ways of making pottery. Before you are heading home San Juan de Oriente, Catarina and the Masaya art market is the place for souvenirs.
Catarina:
Known for it's many nurseries, wood/ cane and bamboo-craft and it's impressive location on the edge of a volcanic crater measuring four miles wide and over 656 feet deep. Inside the crater is Apoyo Lagoon. The viewpoint shows the Crater Lake Apoyo, city Granada, Nicaragua Lake and Mombacho volcano, a view that is hard to forget ones seen.
Masaya art market:
This lovely little city is the very heart of Nicaraguan folklore and crafts. The art market is also called the Indian Market or old market and is the largest in Nicaragua. The market is a great place to look for bargains and souvenirs. It is buzzing with merchants and customers in narrow aisles and offers colorful hand woven hammocks, embroidered blouses, wood carving and hemp weaving such as wall hangings, hats and floor mats. These are only a few of the handicrafts that can be found in this market.

Ruins of León:
Old León was set by Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba in 1524, same person who
settled Granada. The city was abandoned in 1610, probably because of several
natural disasters, as well a lack of Indigenous people whose labor could be exploited. The ruins where found in 1967 by the National University León and recognized in 2000 by UNESCO as a cultural site of international significance.
Many of the buildings that have been excavated and stabilized are along the main avenue leading west from the main plaza, where the statue of
Hernandez de Córdoba and crypt are. Walking along the main avenue, you pass the old mint, the church and the governor’s house. At the far end of the avenue are the convent and church of the Merced order of nuns.
